In the unique informal camp surroundings of the Y Country Camp, campers and counselors have the opportunity to become actively involved with the different aspects of our rich Jewish traditions, in meaningful, fun, and creative ways.

Shabbat has become a very special experience at YCC, beginning with the Friday afternoon Bandshell sing-a-long, where the entire camp is dressed in white tops. Campers are actively involved in the preparations for Shabbat – helping to decorate the dining hall with beautiful centerpieces from Arts & Crafts, and participating in the creative Saturday morning services (“Tefillah”) held at the outdoor amphitheatre.

Perhaps one of the most memorable elements of camp is the Saturday night Havdallah ceremony, where campers and staff gather on the beach under the stars to acknowledge the end of Shabbat, with the traditional twisted candles, spices, wine, and unique melodies.

Israel day – organized by our Israeli and Canadian staff – gives campers the opportunity to learn about life in Israel. The Day includes Israeli food and music in a ‘Bedouin’ tent, anecdotes, an “army obstacle course”, letter writing to Israeli kids, and a chance to attach personal wishes at our own “Western Wall”.

Jewish programming at YCC – creative programs on Shabbat, Israel day, or Tisha B’Av – revolves around the theme of Jewish values, and we welcome the opportunity to help inspire our campers and staff to become the future leaders of our Jewish community.
